"Identity" has multiple meanings in English, including "exact likeness or sameness" and "who or what sb/sth is". People's identity is a continuum of social identity and self-identity. Self-identity refers to an individual's perception of his position in social class. Social identity is related to common identity of one group, which emphasizes the similarities between group members or the common and similar characteristics that the group members believe they have. The similarities of group always exist with its differences from other group. Only by defining the differences, similarities can be identified.
